Supervised vs. Unsupervised Learning for Intentional Process Model Discovery
نویسندگان
چکیده
Learning humans’ behavior from activity logs requires choosing an adequate machine learning technique regarding the situation at hand. This choice impacts significantly results reliability. In this paper, Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are used to build intentional process models (Maps) from activity logs. Since HMMs parameters require to be learned, the main contribution of this paper is to compare supervised and unsupervised learning approaches of HMMs. After a theoretical comparison of both approaches, they are applied on two controlled experiments to compare the Maps thereby obtained. The results demonstrate using supervised learning leads to a poor performance because it imposes binding conditions in terms of data labeling, introduces inherent humans’ biases, provides unreliable results in the absence of ground truth, etc. Instead, unsupervised learning obtains efficient Maps with a higher performance and lower humans’ effort.

متن کاملScalable Model for Extensional and Intensional Descriptions of Unclassified Data
Knowledge discovery from unlabeled data comprises two main tasks: identification of ”natural groups” and analysis of these groups in order to interpret their meaning. These tasks are accomplished by unsupervised and supervised learning, respectively, and correspond to the taxonomy and explanation phases of the discovery process described by Langley [9]. The efforts of Knowledge Discovery from D...
متن کاملPredicting Intentional and Inadvertent Non-compliance
Predictive models were developed for identifying tax-returns having errors that could be characterized as either intentional or inadvertent. Two distinct approaches were used: metamodeling using the literature on general errors, and statistical machine learning techniques for deriving models from audited tax returns. Comparison of these models reveals that while there are commonalities, each ha...
متن کاملIntention-Oriented Process Model Discovery from Incident Management Event Logs
Intention-oriented process mining is based on the belief that the fundamental nature of processes is mostly intentional (unlike activity-oriented process) and aims at discovering strategy and intentional process models from event-logs recorded during the process enactment. In this paper, we present an application of intention-oriented process mining for the domain of incident management of an I...
